About Stilton The story of Stilton links the Great North Road (the A1) and the world famous blue veined cheese. The Romans built a major route to the north and it has been a major road ever since. At one time over forty horse drawn coaches passed through Stilton every day and by the early 19th Century there were twelve coaching inns. The community became prosperous with Innkeepers and Ostlers, Blacksmiths and Farriers providing a range of services. It was an Innkeeper named Cooper Thornhill who could be said to have been responsible for the cheese being named Stilton.
With so many travellers and coachmen to feed he needed to augment the local
supplies of cheese. He found what he needed being made in Melton
Mowbray in Leicestershire and he and other innkeepers served it to their
hungry customers. Its popularity grew from then on and became forever
associated with the village of Stilton. |
